Gemini 3.6 Flash and the Harvey Testimonial

Reviewed byPhilippe LipschutzPartner

Scope of this briefing: Preliminary monitoring note, not a completed legal or technical assessment -- see the flagged section below before treating any claim here as verified performance data. [Monitoring Update -- To Be Continued].

What Launched

On July 21, 2026, Google released Gemini 3.6 Flash alongside Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite and a restricted Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber model, positioning 3.6 Flash as its “workhorse” mid-tier model: 17% fewer output tokens than its predecessor (Gemini 3.5 Flash), lower pricing ($7.50 vs. $9.00 per million output tokens), and improved coding, knowledge-work, and multimodal benchmark scores Google, July 21, 2026.

The Legal-Market Signal

Legal AI vendor Harvey featured a testimonial in Google's own launch materials from Niko Grupen, Harvey's Head of Applied Research: the model “excels at document drafting and review in practice areas like capital markets and corporate M&A” and completes tasks “12% faster on average” than its predecessor SiliconANGLE, July 21, 2026.

What CIDAH Is Doing

We are monitoring the independent Vals.ai LAB leaderboard and will issue a follow-up note once real benchmark data is published for Gemini 3.6 Flash.

PRELIMINARY -- NOT YET INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIED

This is a vendor marketing testimonial, not an independent benchmark result. Harvey separately runs a stricter, independent legal-agent benchmark (“LAB”), hosted at vals.ai/benchmarks/hlab, which grades whether a model fully completes a legal task correctly -- not just partial quality. As of this note, Gemini 3.6 Flash has not yet been scored on LAB; the leaderboard's last update predates the model's release. For context, the previous Gemini Flash model (3.5 Flash) scored just 2.5% on LAB's strict full-task-completion measure, despite a much higher 79.3% partial “criteria pass rate” -- a real illustration of how differently a vendor testimonial and an independent strict benchmark can read. No independently verified data yet exists on how Gemini 3.6 Flash performs on real legal work; treat the Harvey quote as directional, not as evidence of production-readiness for client matters.
